Spaghetti with Turkey Meatballs is a lighter twist on the classic Italian-American dish. Tender turkey meatballs are simmered in a rich tomato sauce and served over al dente spaghetti. This recipe balances the comforting flavors of traditional spaghetti and meatballs with the leaner protein of ground turkey, making it a delicious and healthier option for family dinners.
Ingredients:
For the Turkey Meatballs:
- 1 lb (450g) ground turkey (preferably a mix of breast and thigh meat for better flavor and moisture)
- 1/2 cup (50g) breadcrumbs (whole wheat or regular)
- 1/4 cup (30g) grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup (15g) fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking the meatballs)
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz/800g) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz/425g) tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance the acidity)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup (15g) fresh basil leaves, chopped (optional)
For the Spaghetti:
- 12 oz (340g) spaghetti (whole wheat or regular)
- Salt for the pasta water
For Garnish:
- Grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil or parsley, chopped
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Turkey Meatballs:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, egg, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
- Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. You should get around 20-24 meatballs.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned all over. The meatballs do not need to be fully cooked through at this stage as they will finish cooking in the sauce. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
2. Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
- In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the chopped onion and cook for 4-5 minutes, or until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Add the oregano, basil, sugar (if using), salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, gently nestling them into the sauce. Cover and let the sauce simmer on low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are fully cooked and the sauce has thickened slightly.
3. Cook the Spaghetti:
- While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.
- Drain the spaghetti and set aside.
4. Assemble the Dish:
- Serve the turkey meatballs and tomato sauce over the cooked spaghetti.
- Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil or parsley.
Chef's Notes
- Turkey Meat: Ground turkey is leaner than beef or pork, making it a healthier choice. Mixing breast and thigh meat gives a good balance of flavor and moisture.
- Breadcrumbs: Whole wheat breadcrumbs add extra fiber to the dish. You can also use gluten-free breadcrumbs if needed.
- Tomato Sauce: Adding a small amount of sugar helps to balance the acidity of the tomatoes, but it’s optional based on your taste preference.
- Spaghetti: Whole wheat spaghetti adds extra fiber and nutrients, but regular spaghetti can be used as well.
- Serving Suggestions: Serve with a side of garlic bread or a fresh green salad for a complete meal.
- Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The dish can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of water if the sauce is too thick.
Spaghetti with Turkey Meatballs is a comforting, classic dish with a healthier twist. It’s perfect for a family dinner, offering a hearty meal that’s both nutritious and delicious.
